Meet Jordyn Schara.
A sophomore at a high school in Wisconsin, Jordyn embodies the all-around high school student through her outstanding achievements in green, community service, and academics, and the Discus Awards is proud to recognize Jordyn for her success in and outside the classroom.
Jordyn is the winner of the November 2010 Discus Awards Scholarship, a scholarship for high school students presented to one select Discus Award winner every month of the academic year. From among thousands of Discus Award winners and accomplishments in 10 attribute categories, a panel of judges has chosen Jordyn as the recipient of the $2,000 college scholarship.
The Discus Awards, a high school recognition and scholarship program honoring students who excel in and out of the classroom, looks beyond grades, test scores, and win-loss records and recognizes students for their multi-dimensional talents and passions.
Jordyn is dedicated to her initiatives, activities, and school work, and the Discus Awards is pleased to shine the spotlight on her.

“Prescription and over-the-counter (OTC) drugs that are discarded contaminate our groundwater and if they are left in the medicine cabinet, they can be abused. I spread awareness on how to properly dispose of drugs and helped secure an incinerator and 24/7 drug drop off box for my town.”After learning that most people do not dispose of expired prescription drugs properly, Jordyn responded by creating a nationally recognized project called Wisconsin P2D2, short for Prescription Pill and Drug Disposal. Jordyn's efforts have translated into the proper disposal of more than 1,000 pounds of drugs. P2D2 has expanded into 12 states and has collected a total of more than 100,000 pounds of drugs! |

“I created a national award winning service project named Project READ (Reading Equipment for Americas Defenders) in which I raised over $1200 and collected thousands of pounds of books, magazines, CDs, DVD, letters, games, and candy to send to our troops in Afghanistan.”In addition to creating Project READ, Jordyn mentors students on creating their own service projects. To aid that effort, Jordyn founded a 501(c)3 non-profit organization called HOPE Foundation (Helping Our Peers Excel). Now, not only will Jordyn continue to devote herself to her community, but also she will teach others how to best focus their own service efforts. |

“My involvement in the Key Club allowed me to help launch a campaign (Spread the Word to End the Word) to help my classmates stop using the "R" word (Retard).”Jordyn's achievements span the entire academic spectrum. She has great grades in tough courses and she's won multiple essay contests, including the Elk's Essay Contest out of a pool of 55,000 applicants. She's held leadership positions such as the President and Secretary of the Student Council, and she was selected as the 8th grade commencement speaker. When you sum up all of her academic achievements and combine them with her accomplishments in service and green, you get the Elk's Club Citizen of the Year, and her town's Volunteer of the Year. |
