Academics
I have worked hard over my high school career to be academically successful. I scored 2380 on the SAT, with perfect 800's on the Reading and Writing portions, and only one problem missed on the Mathematics portion. I have taken four SAT Subject Tests, on two of which, Literature and Mathematics Level 2, I scored perfect 800's. On the other two I took, Mathematics Level 1 and Physics, I received high scores as well, with a 730 and 740 respectively. Last year I took three AP exams, all of which I received 5's on, and won an AP Scholar Award. This year I am preparing to take six more AP tests. I achieved the top score of 80 on both the Reading and Writing portions of the PSAT, and am currently a National Merit SemiFinalist, and could possibly be a Finalist as the competition is ongoing.
Arts
The Arts have long been one of the most important aspects of my life. I have been playing classical and jazz piano since the second grade, and have been a member of my high school's Jazz Band for the past 3 years, being a featured soloist on the majority of pieces we play. Over the past few years I have developed a strong interest in the composition of electronic music, and applied to and attended the Sonic Arts Workshop at Oberlin Conservatory in the summer of this year. I was involved in last year’s high school musical, programming synthesizer effects and playing keyboards. Film and Television production has also long been a passion of mine, and I am actively involved in the school TV station. I am now the producer, writer, and host of a bi-weekly DVD review and discussion show.
Work
I have always tried to apply my particular set of skills in a professional as well as academic context. For the past year I have worked as a freelance journalist for the Chicago Sun-Times newspaper, writing reviews of musical acts which then appeared in print and online at the Sun-Times website. Over the summer, I assisted the head critic at the paper in reviewing Chicago's three day music festival Lollapalooza, during which I wrote three to five reviews per day, as well as helping to write a story on security issues at the event. I have also worked as a paid accompanist for soloists in music competitions, rehearsing with multiple musicians each week.
