Over the years, I have developed such qualities of diligence and perseverance through an academically competitive environment. Additionally, having participated in such a rigorous atmosphere, I have learned important organizational and time management skills. My course load, which included several Advanced Placement courses, has encouraged me to think beyond my potential and further embrace challenging situations. I have been able to excel particularly in the math and sciences, taking courses ranging from AP Calculus to AP Chemistry. Having been inspired by these classes, I proceeded to conduct research in the field of nanotechnology at a local university. Through these experiences, I have acquired a determined, organized, and opportunistic mindset, which will help me excel academically.
One of my favorite pastimes is playing tennis for my high school. Playing singles has allowed me to focus, both mentally and physically, on an individual basis-it has encouraged me to think and reflect on my actions. Playing doubles has exposed me to the collaborative nature of the sport, allowing me to interact with my partner, and more importantly learn for him/her. The sport has served as an outlet for all my woes mainly because of its challenging nature. I am able to let go of my worries when I step on court and continuously challenge myself to the next point. Every ball I miss allows me to develop a stronger resolve for the next, and the next. I feel as though I have developed many values from playing tennis; I have learned to take challenge as an opportunity.
As the president of the Sierra Club at my high school, I have been enlightened about several environmental issues and have taken initiative in improving aspects of energy, food, and waste. We have implemented a more efficient lighting system as well as introduced nutrition education, composting, and implemented a recycling program in our school through our annual sustainability expo. I have also been conducting research pertaining to environmental technology in which I investigate the light harvesting efficiency of solar cells through implementation of special crystals. My role as a leader and researcher in the environmental movement has given me knowledge, experience, and passion which I will contribute to the world around me.
