Community Service
The summer after my sophomore year, I volunteered with my church by participating in the Appalachian Service Project; for a week, we helped build houses, install plumbing, etc. What I saw that week was unlike anything else I had ever encountered and continues today to inspire me. The opportunity to help others has always been a driving force behind what I do. I contribute freely on a regular basis to fund-raisers at my church for a group planning to travel to Haiti. I'm involved in helping out with bible school and camp there as well. I have also volunteered at a halloween carnival at my school, and have taken part in the 'CROP Walk to End World Hunger.' This spring, I will possibly be taking another mission's trip to Guatemala for a week, and am very excited.
Arts
My number one extra-curricular is the arts. While expressing myself, I've won multiple awards; I won Best in Show on a painting I did freshmen year, 'Best Body of Work' at the Jackson Schools Art Competition, and 1st place at the Art-a-loan program. I was honored Student of the Week in every year of high school so far, and "Top Art Student" in art every year as well. Likewise, I won "Top English Student" both years. To grow my strength as a writer, I participate in the Writer's Club in my school. Another art activity I participate in is band, I'm first chair of the clarinet section in marching and concert band. This year, I won the Top Soloist award and Top Band Student.
Academics
Because of my mother, who is a teacher at the school district I go to, I've been equipped with a strong work ethic. Over my high school years, I have learned just how essential that is to success. I have a GPA of 3.95 and have won multiple awards for my classes. My freshman year, I won the Top Student Award in english, art, history, and science. My sophomore year, I won the same award for art and english again. Junior year, I won Top Student for Art, English, and Band. Over the past few years, I've won Student of the Month in biology and the arts. Because of my work ethic, I was accepted into the National Honor's Society as well as the Varsity Quiz Bowl team at Concord.
