ATTRIBUTES
Academics
I am a great lover of challenges and an extremely self-motivated person. I am currently in my sophomore year and I have kept a solid 4.0 GPA since 8th grade plus a 4.63 cumulative weighted GPA. I have won many academic honors such as the President's Education Award, W.E.B. DuBois Academic Award, African American Festival of Academic Excellence and so on. Next year I will challenge myself with classes like AP Calculus BC, AP World History, AP Economics, AP Art History, and AP Language. I am also secretary of the Youth Leadership Council/ NAACP at my school. I rank in the top 5% of the Humanities House at my school. I am also a member of the National Society of High School Scholars which was created by Mr. Claes Nobel.
Arts
Every since I was young I have been interested in all areas of the arts. I started playing the piano when I was 6 years old and soon it will be my 10th year of playing the piano. I have won many honors from playing the piano. For example, I won 2nd and 3rd place at the Maryland Piano Competition held annually at the University of Maryland and other notable competitions. The Maryland State Music Teachers Association has also granted me a certificate of achievement in recognition of private piano study. I have also studied dance for 2 years and was a member of my schools Poms Squad which won first place in 3rd division at the County Championships. I am also in my school's Humanities house where I can improve my reading and writing skills.
Community Service
I believe that community service is one of the most important parts of high school life. Whenever I am given the chance, I participate in events where I can help out my school, like at Youth Leadership meetings or a fundraiser. I have also volunteered at my local library for 2 years and completed almost 40 hours there. In middle school, I was also a member of the LEO's Club where the students could earn hours for cleaning up the school campus and in neighborhoods. Over the summer I volunteered at a low-income school as a teacher's aid for a kindergarten class. I really loved the bright kids and the experience of the teaching environment. This summer I will be working as a CIT at an Arts Center and volunteering at Shady Grove Hospital.
