Academics
Challenging academics are my passion! I've taken 5 AP classes (including AP Calculus BC), many Honors classes, and have High Honors. With a study on clams, I placed first in the State Science Fair (Animal Sciences), received a prize of Outstanding Achievement from the Meteorology Association, and the U.S. Air force of Higher Achievement. I've received Academic Excellence awards for Honors Biology, Health, Mathematics, English, World Religions & Governments, and P.E. I've been in the Gifted & Talented program for Math (and English) since 3rd grade. As a Sophomore, I advanced to Regionals in Poetry Out Loud. I am currently in the National Honor Society I dream of attending an Ivy League college; as a Hispanic woman my voice could make a big difference in the Engineering and Science fields.
Faith
My faith in Jesus Christ is the most important thing in my life! I attend a Roman Catholic church regularly, where I go to a one-and-a-half hour rehearsal before hand to participate in the Teen Praise Band that sings during mass, and stay after mass for two hours for Youth Group (where you share your faith with other teenagers and dive deeper into your personal faith). I've been to two retreats, where I've participated in fellowship, and have helped at Church Suppers, and with kids Sunday School. My Youth Group is planning on a trip to Puerto Rico in the summer of 2013. Besides my involvement at church, my faith is very personal to me. I pray to God about my problems and I know God has a prosperous future for me. I hope to be a light to those around me and bring them closer to Jesus.
Community Service
I've participated in Big Brothers Big Sisters for almost three years. My little sister and I have grown to love each other through activities such as bowling, rollerblading, baking, scrap-booking, singing, and more. I know I will always be there for her, as a mentor for life. We share in the same faith, and we spend 10-20 hours together every month. I've helped local soup kitchens, and I help lead mass on Sundays by singing. I've been involved in the Student Leadership Advocacy Committee at school, where I was a leader in organizing a 5-K to raise money for the war in the Congo. It was my first time leading a big service project, and it was a lot of hard work, but in the end we raised over $1,000 and had over 50 runners. I always want to be deeply integrated into the community around me.
