Athletics
As many young kids, I participated in every sporting event I was able to. I even convinced my parents to let me play flag football with the boys in a league at the YMCA when I was ten. Although I enjoyed all of the sports I started in, I had to take into consideration that I would not be able to play them all forever. My freshman year of high school I played volleyball, basketball, and softball while maintaining a 3.8 GPA. However, my schedule got hectic and I narrowed my athleticism to only basketball and softball for my sophomore year. In my third year of high school I was an experienced varsity softball player and led my teammates to become a stronger, more united team. Now as a senior, I have the aspirations to attend Bellarmine University and play softball as a Knight.
Faith
Growing up in a Christian family, it was normal to attend church on Sundays. As a typical child would, I found church a bit boring; however, this changed immensely in the next few years. My church began offering youth groups when I was entering the fourth grade, ever since then I have been strongly involved in my church community. I have attended every mission trip offered since my 6th grade year. Whether it was serving dinner at a soup kitchen downtown or traveling to Pawley's Island, SC I felt honored to spread God's word while helping those in need. Last year I was part of the group that traveled to the outskirts of Chicago to aid the Spanish population. We completed projects such as rehabilitating a run-down house for a family of 7. I aim to continue my beliefs through college.
Green
The Earth: it's the place we live, why shouldn't we take care of it? Although I have been pushing my family to recycle since the day our city offered recycling bins, I never got fully involved in the earth saving process until this year when I took an Environmental Sciences class at my high school. I, along with my other classmates, were required to do a project cleaning up our city. This sounds minor, but it impacted more than I could have imagined. I spent 30 hours cleaning up trash around our city parks that month. After about the first ten minutes I made it my goal to impact the environment. Though the parks looked cleaner I knew there was much more to be done. I changed all of the light bulbs in my house to higher efficiency CFL bulbs. I also installed aerators on the faucets.
