Green
I have been a part of a local "going green" campaign in my neighborhood. One Saturday out the month we dedicate our time into cleaning not only our blocks both others as well; in what we call a neighborhood cleanup. My grandmother is the block captain of her block so she usually has close ties with State Representative Kenyatta Johnson and they've had several meetings as to how we can both make and keep out neighborhoods clean. My grandmother allowed me to jump on board with a local recycling committee in the South Philadelphia area, in which many people are allowed to bring their recycled items and things they no longer treasure such as old magazines, broken chairs, bottles and such to be put to a greater use.
Community Service
My family has a local basketball league entitled, "Steven Bligen Memorial League" in which it serves to provide the youth (ages 5-21) both something positive to do over the summer and something they love. In the South Philadelphia area there aren't always the most positive role models that present themselves. With the lack of positive role models, rebellious kids are often produced and it makes for a deviant actions and a not so fruitful neighborhood. However, since we've given birth to this I initially thought that the violence in the neighborhood would increase and it would cause for more chaos. That in fact did not happen! The league has provided the people with an opportunity to fellowship with one another and have healthy debates concerning the basketball games.
