12th Grade, MI
I am currently a high school junior who has been on the Dean's list since freshmen year. My current GPA is a 3.74, I'm part of the National Honor Society and plan on joining FCCLA. My senior year I am planning on taking two AP classes (AP Lang and AP Spanish). I plan on bringing my class rank down from top 15% to at least top 5% by taking AP courses and maintaing straight As my junior year until then end of my senior year. Education to me is really important and I take pride in my grades and education. There was a time when African-Americans were prohibited from being able to read, write or learn and now that free education is available I want to take advantage of being able to learn and set precedents for other African-Americans to follow.
Community service is very important when applying for colleges. I believe that not only should doing community service be one's main focus to get into one's school of choice, but to also show that you can give back to your community. Freshmen and sophomore year I thought that all I had to do was get good grades and a high ACT score to get into an outstanding colleges. I did my reserach and NOT SO MUCH! I researched that colleges look for what one does outside of school such as community service and other extra curricular activities. Currently I am mentoring at the Kalamazoo Gospel Mission with elementary students. It feels great to know that I am helping someone who isn't so fortunte and that I'm also giving back to the community.
As part of growing up it also comes with a lot of responsibilities. Currently I have been employed for the past five months. I started out at Burger King as a cashier, but after speaking with one of Papa Murphy's store owners, I expressed interest in getting a new job. Shortly afterwards I got a call from Papa Murphy's expressing their interest in me. I got the job and was very thankful. I believe that while working in high school one can learn what's it like to also be responsible in college (working and keeping up with grades). With tuition prices increasing college can be very costly. I come from a family who would be considered "below poverty line" so working and trying to make ends meet is my only choice. Lastly, I'm going to be on my own one day which is also why I work.
