Lucy is the winner of the May 2010 Discus Scholarship, a scholarship presented to one select Discus Awards winner every month of the school year. From among thousands of Discus Awards winners and accomplishments in 10 attribute categories, a panel of judges has chosen Lucy as the recipient of the $2,000 college scholarship.

The Discus Awards, a high school awards program honoring students who excel in and out of the classroom, look beyond grades, scores, and win-loss records and recognize students for their multi-dimensional talents and passions.

Lucy is actively pursuing her passions and beliefs, and the Discus Awards are honored to shine the spotlight on her.

Community Service

“Teaching is a humbling experienced that has made me appreciate education all the more. Working with inner-city students far from my home in Vermont has broadened my perspective and instilled within me a desire to continue with community service throughout my life.”
Every week, Monday through Thursday, Lucy spends more than ten hours each day tutoring inner-city students in mathematics and reading.  And don't let the "assistant" in assistant teacher fool you; Lucy facilitates reading groups and independently teaches an eighth-grade girl in pre-algebra every morning.

Academics

“I am first and foremost a student. My academic achievements stem directly from a deep-rooted love of learning...In my efforts to take all honors and AP classes in high school I completed my required credits in three years and decided to test my academic background with hands on experience”
In just three years in the classroom, Lucy compiled an impressive list of academic accolades.  She is ranked number one in her class and is a member of the National Honors Society.  She's also been recognized with numerous academic awards including the Frederick Douglass and Susan B. Anthony Award, the Dartmouth Alumni Club Book Award, and the Society of Women Engineers Certificate of Merit for Honor in Science and Mathematics.  Lucy has worked hard inside the classroom, so she can pursue her passions outside.

Green

“I am an active member of my school's environmental club. We organized a Trash-On-The-Lawn-Day to assess school waste and improve recycling habits. TOTLD lead to a composting program with local farms. ”
Lucy lives on a farm in Vermont where her family raises organic produce, poultry and pigs.  Last summer, she interned for the Vice President of the Climate Change branch of ICF International, a global consulting firm focused in technology solutions in energy and climate change.  During her internship, she authored a grant proposal explaining how students can organize an environmental club at school.  Lucy grew up in an eco-friendly environment and she is now finding ways to share her knowledge with others.
