Nominate your student for a Discus Award
Awards and scholarships for all-around high school students
Colleges today are looking for students who do more than make the grade. The Discus Awards are designed with that in mind, focusing on ten attributes that capture the whole person behind the grades and test scores. You already know that your child can’t be reduced to a handful of letters and numbers. Why not encourage her to shine by applying for a Discus Award? Winning an award enhances college applications by highlighting your son or daughter’s achievements in and outside the classroom. The best all-around applicants will be eligible for a Discus scholarship for students.
You raised your child to pursue her passions for excellence. Doesn’t she deserve a different kind of scholarship award?
Does your student excel in 3 key attributes?
Your son or daughter shines in more ways than one. Discus Award winners have a broad range of accomplishments and achievements. The award recognizes ten major categories, or attributes, where high school students can make an important contribution. Every Discus Award winner has a proven track-record in at least three of these attributes:
Academics: For grades, honors, competitions...
Arts: For drama, writing, music, film, photography...
Athletics: For sports, training, coaching, cheerleading...
Community Service: For volunteering, tutoring, mentoring...
Faith: For youth groups, missions, retreats...
Government: For student government, model UN, politics, campaigns...
Green: For clean-ups, recycling, building awareness...
Technology: For Web, programming, science, blogging...
Work: For part-time jobs, family business, entrepreneurship...
Other Achievements: For clubs, student activities, overcoming obstacles, and more...
How to Nominate your High School Student
You've always encouraged your child to go for the gold. Give her one last nudge in the right direction, and nominate your high school student for a Discus Award. Simply choose her three areas of excellence, and the Discus Awards will send her an email asking her to finish her nomination. With some encouragement from you and the tips below on what makes a great nomination, her application will be ready for our judging panel of teachers, guidance counselors, school administrators and college admissions officers.
Help your child's nomination stand out with the following tips:
- Be specific about accomplishments, think “I’m the president of my school’s banjo enthusiasts club” rather than “I love music.”
- Show our judges what your child has done by including photos and videos.
- Embrace differences - your child is unique in her qualities, abilities and accomplishments; pick achievements that separate her from the pack.
