Recognized as: Actress, Singer

Body of Work: Lulu on Nickelodeon's True Jackson, VP; Soomi Alverez in Schooled

What Makes Her A Discus Awards Winner: Ashley is able to balance 10.5 hours of work a day with school, maintaining above a 3.8 GPA throughout high school.  She has been acting and singing since she was 4 years old and she has never slowed her pursuit of her passions inside and outside the classroom.

Alexandra Rose Rieger

Recognized as: Actress, Singer

Body of Work: Speaking role in Akeelah & the Bee; Played herself on episode of Gene Simmons: Family Jewels

What Makes Her A Discus Awards Winner: Alexandra is a youth ambassador and has worked with more than 30 charities and organizations around the world.  She has used both her acting and singing careers as a launchpad for raising awareness of issues that mean so much to her.  She is a straight A student who continues to challenge herself in the classroom, currently taking a college-level engineering, design, and robotics class.

Robert Hayes

Recognized as: Actor, Model

Body of Work: Role on FOX's Prison Break; Actor in commercials for Dick's Sporting Goods, McDonald's, Nerf and more!

What Makes Him A Discus Awards Winner: Robert spends countless hours volunteering at the children’s church at Ben Washington Baptist Church where he collects his gently worn clothing and gives it away to boys in need.  He has also received numerous academic awards such as The Pride of Lions Award, which is awarded to one student at his high school each year by a team of teachers, first place in the Science Fair, and the BCIS Academic Achievement award.  His ability to effectively balance his career, his school work, and his community service makes him a deserving winner of a Discus Award.

Melinda Johnson

Recognized as: Pageant Contestant

Body of Work: Reigning Miss Teen Heart of the USA

What Makes Her A Discus Awards Winner: Melinda was the captain of her junior varsity soccer team during her freshmen year, and made varsity her sophomore year. She was named the Scholar Athlete for having the highest GPA and represented her team at the county banquet. She also coaches three-year olds in a developmental program called Soccer Starts and has refereed kids of all ages for each of the past five years.  She has maintained a 4.0 GPA throughout high school and has received numerous academic awards.  She is the Junior Class President and was one of five students chosen to represent her school as part of the prestigious Gwinnett Student Leadership Team.  Melinda epitomizes what it means to be an all-around high school student and Discus Awards winner.

Julian Plowden

Recognized as: Outstanding Student

Body of Work: Winner of 2009-2010 National Coca-Cola Scholarship

What Makes Him A Discus Awards Winner: Julian is a strong student and has proven it by winning three bronze medals at the Muscogee County Annual Academic Decathlon, being named the National Exchange Club Student of the Month for his school, and winning the Georgia Star award given to the student who receives the highest SAT score at his high school.  Outside the classroom, Julian has led his school's March of Dimes Campaign, raising $10,000, which is the largest amount raised out of all Georgia high schools.  Additionally, he has volunteered over 500 community service hours in nursing homes, at local food drives, and more.  Julian has received countless other forms of recognition, and being a Discus Awards winner has moved him into another elite group of all-around high school students.

Shefali Haldar

Recognized as: Science Researcher

Body of Work: Winner of the 2009 National Association of Biology Teachers Award

What Makes Her A Discus Awards Winner: In 2008, Shefali became one of only seven people in the history of her dance school to complete her Bharatanatyam Arangetram.  Bharatanatyam Arangetram is an ancient form of Indian Classical Dance, and Arangetram means a graduation performance.  Even after being nationally recognized for her scientific research, Shefali continues to commit herself to her school work, receiving straight As and participating in her high school's science research program.  Shefali achieves inside and outside of the classroom, and for that she is a Discus Awards winner.
