Meet Jaimee Alsing.

A senior at a high school in Colorado, Jaimee exemplifies the all-around high school student through her success in work, arts, and academics and the Discus Awards is proud to recognize Jaimee for her outstanding achievements in and outside the classroom.

Jaimee is the winner of the October 2010 National All-Around Student Scholarship, a scholarship for high school students presented to one select Discus Award winner every month of the academic year. From among thousands of Discus Award winners and accomplishments in 10 attribute categories, a panel of judges has chosen Jaimee as the recipient of the $2,000 college scholarship.

The Discus Awards, a high school recognition and scholarship program honoring students who excel in and out of the classroom, looks beyond grades, scores, and win-loss records and recognizes students for their multi-dimensional talents and passions.

Jaimee is devoted to her business and pursuing her passions in the arts and in the classroom, and the Discus Awards is pleased to shine the spotlight on her.

Work

“I established Colorado Care Co. in 8th grade after I realized that commercial hermit crab food actually kills hermit crabs. I studied nutrition, formulated a complete diet, and made an accompanying food. I designed a label for the food and marketed it to local and online pet stores.”
Since Jaimee founded her exotic pet food company, she has expanded her product and sales to include reptile and fish foods. She received the Celebration for Young Entrepreneurs Award (13-17 age group) for her work. On top of running her own business, Jaimee has interned at Coal Creek Veterinary Hospital since she was 16-years old.

Arts

“I have played violin since 4th grade. Since, I have had lessons and played in the Arapaho Philharmonic Youth Orchestra for the last six years. I have been in a quartette, which plays at weddings, churchs, and in parks, since 11th grade. Not only do I play violin, but I also collect international instruments, to name a few, I play the didgeridoo, siku, and djembe.”
Her artistic talents extend beyond her musical aptitude and curiosity. Jaimee spent nine months designing, planning, and creating a prom dress made entirely out of duct tape. She also exhibits her craft through the graphic design for her company's advertising material. Jaimee is truly a jill-of-all-trades when it comes to the Arts.

Academics

“I have been a member of National Honors Society since Junior year and a member of our chapter of Junior Classical League (Latin Club) and State JCL treasurer.”
While Jaimee is a unique, outstanding individual outside the classroom, she consistently performs impressively in school, making her achievements all the more remarkable. She has never dropped off the Honor Roll and has continuously challenged herself with International Baccalaureate, Advanced Placement, and Honors courses.
